Rick Santorum Bows Out

On April 11, 2012, in News, by Rightwinger

Rick Santorum suspended his campaign for President yesterday .  His choice was probably a wise go.  Although it was still possible for Santorum to catch up to Romney, it was highly unlikely.  Romney holds a significant lead in the delegate count and most of the states voting on April 24.  Mitt was even competitive in Santorum’s home state of Pennsylvania.  States holding primaries in May were favorable to Santorum, but it probably wouldn’t have made a difference given Romney’s lead.   Although it wasn’t the result he (or I) wanted, Santorum can be proud of the campaign he waged over the last year. Santorum came out of nowhere to become a major factor in the race.  He became the last non-Romney flavor of the month just days before caucusing started in Iowa, the first state to cast ballots and fortunately, the one where Santorum spent most of his time.  He went on to win Iowa while Mitt Romney took New Hampshire and Newt Gingrich won South Carolina.  After a slump in the polls, Santorum came back a second time to  win the Missouri primary and caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota.  But, after Newt Gingrich chose to stay in the race and split the conservative vote despite having no chance of winning the nomination, Santorum’s task became that much more hard. Santorum has much to be proud of.  When the race started, Santorum languished in the single digits of pretty much every opinion poll in the country, received small to no attention in the national media, and operated a campaign on a budget more suited to a campaign for student council.  Despite those disadvantages and relying on his heartfelt conservative beliefs, he nearly gave the frontrunner a run for his money.  Well done, Senator.
